✏️ Kinetic Letters Programme

Helping Children Become Confident, Fluent Writers

At our school, we are proud to introduce Kinetic Letters, a whole-school approach to handwriting that supports children in developing strong, confident, and fluent writing skills from an early age.

What Are Kinetic Letters?

Kinetic Letters is a unique handwriting programme that focuses on the physical skills children need to write, rather than just the visual appearance of letters. It recognises that writing is a movement skill, not simply a drawing task.

The programme helps children:

  • Build core strength and stability
  • Develop fine motor control
  • Learn correct letter formation (“motion families”)
  • Improve posture and pencil grip

Why Is It Important?

Strong handwriting foundations support all areas of learning. By teaching children how to move when writing, Kinetic Letters helps them to:

  • Write more efficiently and comfortably
  • Reduce fatigue when writing for longer periods
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Focus more on ideas and creativity rather than struggling with letter formation

How We Teach Kinetic Letters

Kinetic Letters lessons are taught regularly and include:

  • Short, engaging sessions
  • Fun physical warm-ups to prepare the body for writing
  • Clear modelling of letter movements
  • Opportunities to practise writing in a structured, supportive way

Children are taught four “motion families” of letters, making learning simple, memorable, and effective.

In Nursery and Reception

Our youngest learners begin by developing:

  • Early motor skills
  • Hand strength and coordination
  • Pre-writing movements through play and physical activity

This ensures they are fully ready to write when formal teaching begins.

Supporting Your Child at Home

You can support your child by:

  • Encouraging activities that build hand strength (e.g. playdough, Lego, drawing)
  • Providing opportunities for mark-making and drawing
  • Praising effort and progress rather than perfection

We will also share helpful tips and guidance throughout the year.

Our Commitment

By embedding Kinetic Letters into our curriculum, we are ensuring that every child has the best possible start to becoming a confident writer.
